An exceptionally steep location with 'The View' necessitated a compact, carefully designed, and straightforwardly constructed home that embraced the dramatic landscape for Jane and her family. The compact floor plan feels beautifully spacious through its varying connections to the exterior and the creation of different zones within the open plan living area.
The house is two parts, the base contains two bedrooms and a bathroom while the SIPs box (upper level) includes the main living spaces and bedroom. The two levels are able to be adapted to function independently in the future if need be.
The SIPs - Structurally Insulated Panel - construction was selected for its quick and simple panel assembly on a site with difficult access, it's very high thermal performance, and low-maintenance exterior finish.
At the upper level the living areas connect to the site in all aspects; to the west via a large fixed window framing Lion Rock, to a large covered deck with views to the Maungaroa Ridgeline and the immediate bush, and to the rear of the site where sheltered vege gardens make use of the retaining walls holding back the slope above.
