C-Architecture Design Studio.
We design homes that feel generous and joyful, work beautifully, and endure harsh environments.
C-Architecture is a small residential architecture studio specialising in coastal homes, new builds, and renovations across Auckland, Piha Beach, and the Coromandel Peninsula. We help unlock the full potential of sites and spaces, creating homes that are refined, timeless, practical & durable, and designed for the way people actually live.
We focus on three key principles:
Thoughtful Planning & Efficient Design - making homes that feel spacious, connected, and effortless to live in.
Coastal Durability – designing homes to perform in demanding environments, with careful selection of materials and considered detailing.
Practical Design – Beautiful, timeless architecture that is buildable and grounded in realistic budgets.
We transform challenges into opportunities, whether it’s reimagining an older bach, designing a new coastal home, or unlocking hidden potential in a tricky site. Every project is tailored to lifestyle and the unique character of a site, ensuring spaces that flow naturally and connect seamlessly to the outdoors.
We believe great homes are shaped by the way people live. That’s why listening closely to our clients is central to everything we do. We work collaboratively to clarify your vision, navigate challenges, and uncover creative solutions — often in ways that surprise and delight.
Orientation, natural light, ventilation, and the rhythms of daily life guide our designs. By prioritising these elements, we create homes that are resilient, beautiful, and effortlessly harmonious — not only highly functional but spaces that inspire you every day.
Having designed numerous homes in exposed coastal environments — and living active outdoor lives by the sea ourselves — we understand the demands and rewards of coastal living. We design buildings that respond carefully to their setting, using durable materials that weather naturally and beautifully over time. Timelessness in architecture is always our aim.
We are equally passionate about renovations and additions as we are about new homes. Reimagining existing houses often reveals hidden potential — improving awkward layouts, unlocking light, and creating spaces that feel far more generous and functional than before. Seeing clients rediscover their homes with renewed joy and ease is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work.
CAROLYN GUNDY Bachelor of Architecture ANZIA
I’m the founder of C-Architecture and I’m a registered Architect with 30 years of experience specialising in residential design, particularly in coastal locations. My home at Piha Beach allows me to both live and work in an ever-changing, inspiring atmosphere. More recently I have also been operating my architectural studio in Whangamata Beach. I work between both of these amazing communities. And I have two wonderful teenage daughters that keep me busy.
As well as a love for all things architecture, I find joy in family and nature. Surfing is my passion and is a big part of my family life. I also love snowboarding, mountain biking and running in the bush. This physical connection with nature fuels my creativity and brings a unique perspective and insight to my architectural projects.
My approach to architecture is grounded in a commitment to creating simple, highly functional, beautiful spaces that feel as good as they look through enhancing awareness and relationships with the landscape. I prioritise passive, sustainable and contextually sensitive design principles.
